Type of beams based on supports

Types of beam based on Supports

There are six types of beams based on support. They are explained as follows:

(Read the definitions given and understand from the picture of the respective beam)

(1)Simply Supported Beam: The beam that has hinged support on one end and roller support on other.

(2)Cantilever Beam: The beam that has fixed support on one end and the other support is free. A balcony projecting out of an apartment is a good example of cantilever beam.

(3)Fixed Beam: The beam that has both the ends fixed . Beams in a framed structure are good example of fixed beams.

(4)Propped Cantilever Beam: The beam that has one end fixed and roller support on the other end.

(5)Continuous Beam: The beam that has supports at regular intervals as shown in the figure is called a continuous beam. When the beam structure is very long, we find this kind of arrangement.

(6)Over-hanging Beam: The beam that is supported in the middle but free from it's end as shown in the figure is called an over-hanging beam.

(The last column in the picture shows the free-body diagram of the beams)

Here we are done with the types of beam based on support, to understand the types of the beam based on cross-section please check-out the next post.
